8K for Labor Day!

Hi all! Not planning on going out of town for Labor Day Weekend and looking for something to do? The greater Memphis area has a lot of events happening, and one such event is the 8th Annual Chick-fil-A Run/Walk that’s taking place about 20 minutes away from the Church Lake Apartment Community!

The 8th annual Chick-fil-A run/walk is benefiting Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South (the largest and fastest growing organization providing economic education to K-12 students). The race will take place on Labor Day, Monday September 6th at 9 am in downtown Memphis. Online registration for the race lasts until tomorrow, September 3rd. You can also register on-site beginning at 7:30 am on race day.

Though exercising may not be your idea of fun on your work-free weekend, it’s for a good cause, and can be really fun with a group of friends. The whole point of the race is to have fun; try not to focus on winning or who may be overlapping you.

5K participants may pick up their race packets from Sept. 1 through Sept. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Junior Achievement located at 307 Madison Ave.

Besides this race, what else do you have planned for this weekend?

Royalty in Southaven!

Become Royalty!

Have  you always known that your little girl is a princess? Well, here’s her chance to enter into royalty! The Mid-South Fair is now accepting application for poised, personable goodwill representatives for the 2010 Miss Youth Personality and Miss Mid-South Fair contest.

Miss Youth Personality contestants must be between the ages of 13 and 16. Miss Mid-South Fair contestants must be single and between the ages of 17 and 24 as of September 1st. The deadline to enter both contests is September 9th, and the date of the actual contest is September 24th at the DeSoto Civic Center. This is also the start of the Mid-South Fair which will run from September 24th to October 3rd.

Judging is based on appearance, poise, intelligence, and personality. An educational scholarship will be awarded to the winners. There has been a lot of speculation over the years over whether or not these scholarship pageants have any merit, or whether or not they’re just beauty pageants. Now, I’ve seen shows like Toddlers and Tiaras, and how those little girls behave, and every scholarship pageant isn’t like that.

I’ve competed in many, many scholarship pageants in my life, and I can truly attest that they did wonders for my confidence and poise. I learned valuable interview skills that I have used in the professional world, and walking the runways has given me the confidence I need to speak or do relatively anything in front of large crowds. As long as you research the pageant and see exactly what it’s about, I personally don’t see any harm in it.

If you would like more information about the pageants, visit the Mid-South Fair’s website.

Your daughter/sister/cousin/friend can live like the royals!

Church Lake Apartments

Have you ever seen newscasts of people who had lost all of their belongings in an apartment fire? What would you do if something like that happened to you? I’m not saying that it’s a high chance that it would, but you know what they say, “better safe than sorry”. For your sake, renters insurance for your apartment would be a very wise investment.

Renters insurance is the easiest way to make the most out of your comfortable Southaven living. It protects your belongings against unforeseen disasters, and gives you a great peace of mind when they occur. If you haven’t thought about renters insurance for your apartment before, now is definitely the time.

If you have wisely invested in renters insurance, you don’t have much to worry about. Many

people don’t take advantage of renters insurance because of a common myth: the cost. Renters insurance is surprisingly inexpensive. For a small fee a month, normallybetween $10 and $20, you can save thousands of dollars in case you have to replace your belongings. In all honesty, I’d much rather pay about $10 a month than to pay over $200 to replace a lost television or over $500 for a new laptop.

Renters insurance also covers liability for anything you’re found negligent to have caused an accident or a fire. Basic renters insurance may run you as little as $100 a year. In my opinion, that’s a small price to pay for piece of mind and the reassurance of securing your precious belongings. This video shows what happens when people choose not to invest.

How do you get renters insurance? National insurance sites like State Farm and All State all carry policies. You can also visit the Church Lake Apartments leasing office, and they’ll be happy to get you on your way to a higher piece of mind in no time.

An exercise ball.

Exercise balls are great exercise tools!

When I say that Southaven Second-Graders are on the ball, I mean that literally. The second-graders at Greenbrook Elementary School in Southaven were in for a surprise when they walked into their classroom on the first day of school and found that instead of chairs, there were exercise balls at their desks. Rachel Anglin (2nd grade teacher) sought the donation from the DAC-Southaven in order to promote fitness and good posture among her pupils.

Now, when I think of these exercise balls, added with a bunch of second graders, I just know that chaos will ensue. But from the pictures on the internet, it looks like the kids are being pretty well behaved and are using them as regular chairs. If one misbehaves, they’ll lose their ball for the day and have to sit in a chair. Many straighten up pretty quickly because they want their balls back. I still wouldn’t take those chances though, lol.

Exercise balls are actually pretty beneficial, and not to just help second-graders to get the wiggles out. Apart from providing you with balance training, almost every exercise that you perform with the exercise ball strengthens your core by working them, and they exercise multiple muscles at the same time while you are forced to balance your body while performing them. Even just sitting on them helps with posture.

Get on the ball!

If you’ve always wanted to “get on the ball” so to speak, replacing your desk chair with an exercise ball is a great idea. There are multiple reasons why this could be beneficial such as it helping your posture and balance, and having you move around more rather than sitting in one spot all day.

Exercise balls are exercise and fun at the same time! Have you ever used an exercise ball in  your workouts? If not, throw one into the mix the next time you’re working out in the Church Lake Apartments fitness center.

Spend a day in Memphis!

Hey Church Lake Apartments family and friends! Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Amidst the plethora of events going on this weekend in the DeSoto and Memphis areas, the Davis YMCA Community Festival is something worth checking out.

The Davis YMCA Community Festival is taking place this Saturday at August 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mayor A.C. Wharton and Rockey the Redbird will join the Whitehaven community in a day of fun, food and fitness to benefit the Davis YMCA.

There are many different events taking place at the festival: the annual YMCA/Southland Mall 5K Walk, BBQ cooking contest, silent auction, senior citizen bake sale, appearances by the Whitehaven High School band, pom pom squad and football team, and a car and bike show featuring motorcycles from the HRMC of Memphis. Seems like a lot of stuff to be taking place in only 7 hours, doesn’t it?

One thing that I can really appreciate about these festivals is when they are sponsoring a good cause. The YMCA is partnering with the HRMC of Memphis to raise funds for the Y’s We Build People campaign. The We Build People Campaign also supports the Y’s Open Door initiative which makes it possible for them to keep their doors open to any and everyone regardless of their ability to pay.

Admission is free and open to everyone! Don’t you just love it when great events are this close to the Church Lake Apartment Community? The Davis YMCA Community Festival is only 9 minutes from ‘home‘. :)

Hope to see you there!

Circus Acts

The Circus Is Coming To Town!

Hey Church Lake! Are you looking for a different kind of circus experience? I’m not talking abstract, Cirque de Solei different, but a circus with soul. If so, you should attend the UniverSoul Circus at Hickory Ridge Mall in Memphis on August 24.

Don’t get it twisted, the circus is fun for everyone of all ages! I may not go every single time that a circus comes to town, but I’ll attend occasionally, especially if one of my nieces or nephews are with me.

For those that have never been to a show, the UniverSoul Circus is easily one of the most interactive circus’ in the world. This circus hasn’t been around as long as Barnum and Bailey, however; this dream began in 1994. It’s vision was to explore the various talents other than singing and dancing that black performers had to offer. It’s the ultimate experiance in “Hip Hop Under the Big Top“.

The stunts are amazing, aerial acts are stunning, and it’s just a whole lot of fun! Everyone can enjoy this circus! From dancing poodles, to high flying basketball dunkers, to tight rope walkers, to animal acts, you’re sure to see it all.

If you’re interested, head to the Hickory Ridge Mall in Memphis, which is about 30 minutes from the Church Lake Apartments. Tickets range from $18 to about $28Kids prices start at about $15. The circus will be in Memphis from August 24 to August 29. Hope to see you there!

Logo for the University of Mississippi

Image via Wikipedia

The heat index was well over 100 degrees on Sunday, but the practice field at Ole Miss was even hotter. Over 400 people gathered around the practice field to see the University of Mississippi’s newest team member: Jeremiah Masoli.

Who is Jeremiah Masoli? He’s the former starting quarterback for Oregon, and on Sunday, he donned Ole Miss’ red and blue for the very first time. Masoli was kicked off of the Oregon team in June after two run-ins with the police, and has been accepted into an Ole Miss grad program. He is awaiting a waiver from the NCAA that will make him eligible for this season as a walk-on. This is a pretty big deal for everyone.

It was like a tennis match of epic performance; every time Masoli shuffled down the field, the crowds moved with him. In a brief summary of his performance, Masoli’s arm was strong, but his timing was a bit off. This is to be expected however; Masoli has to get used to new receivers.

Masoli isn’t a shoe in for the starting quarterback position however. Nathan Stanley is at the forefront right now, as his talents emerged from spring practice. He is more seasoned in the Rebels’ plays and terminology, so right now, he’s looking like the better choice (for obvious reasons). The thing is, Masoli has come down and showed out. He already has huddle presence, and is taking the snap naturally, even though he’s not familiar with the plays as of yet.

Maybe he’ll change it from a rebuilding year to one that will win at least 8 games? Only time will tell.

Are you a Rebels fan?

Root Beer

Hey Church Lake! For those of you who are of legal age to drink, maybe you’d be interested in attending the Snowden “Beverage” Festival this Saturday, August 7th from 2-6 pm. Tickets are $35 the day of the event and don’t worry, you won’t have to BYOB.

What kind of beverage am I talking about? I’m talking brews, logger, ales, that type of “beverage”. Get my drift? It’s all taking place at the Snowden Grove Amphitheater in Southaven. This is a pretty big deal for some in Southaven. In order to keep things safe and orderly, Mr. Taxi in Southaven is offering a flat rate of $25 round trip for up to 4 people to and from the event and the Holiday Inn or Comfort Suites.

The festival will feature over 70 drinks from around the world. Once your ID has been checked at the festival, you will receive a wristband and a souvenir sampling glass.  Generally speaking, the glass will allow you unlimited samples during the event, but please be cautioned: be sure to limit your intake. They want this to be an enjoyable time for everyone.

There will be food for purchase (as you will definitely need it), and live musical acts including Cody Dickenson and The Perfect Vessels. Check the website for a full list of who’s attending.

Be safe if you attend, and drink responsibly!

I don’t get it; what have we done to make Mother Nature want to place us all in a week long sauna? I think that at some point during this week I’ll try that egg on the sidewalk trick. I wouldn’t eat it of course, but I’m sure I’ll have a perfectly sunny-side up egg in about 5 seconds. With that being said, the temperature will rise to about 100 degrees this week. And that, in my opinion, is utterly ridiculous.

So, to answer the question, ‘how hot is it?’, the heat combined with high humidity will drive the heat index up to 110-115 degrees most days this week, as reported by the National Weather Service. The temperature should peak above 100 degrees today, 102 on Tuesday, 103 on Wednesday and 100 on Thursday. You can’t even get relief when the sun goes down! It’s slated to be around 83 degrees this evening! Looks like we just can’t win.

Here are some quick tips to help you stay cool in this heat:

  • Slow down, avoid strenuous activity
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature. Protect your face with a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Drink plenty of water regularly and often, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Limit intake of alcoholic beverages. They can actually dehydrate you!
  • Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • 3:00 pm is the hottest part of the day, so avoid prolonged stays in the sun during this time.

Stay cool out there!
