HEY! Stop that Prius!

Posted on March 10, 2010 · Leave a Comment

On Tuesday March 9, 2010, in El Cajon California, James Sikes was driving on Interstate 8, outside of San Diego, when his car started to speed up uncontrollably. He “stood up” on his break pedal, and even tried to put the emergency break on, to no avail. He called police, and California Patrol was quickly in pursuit to try to help the man stop the car. After a frantic thirty minutes, they were able to stop the car, and Mr. Sikes emerged with no injuries.

What could have caused his car to speed up to 94 miles per hour? Toyota recently had a vast recall on gas pedals, but the Prius is said to not be a part of the recall, but it could be a part of a recall for the floor mats that are said to easily grab onto the gas pedal. The man driving the Prius said that the floor mat was not stuck to the pedal, which leads me to believe that it may have been an issue under the hood. Scary!!! What are your thoughts on this story?

high schoolOk Church Lake, so who’s bright idea was it to have school on a Saturday? Well, the DeSoto County School System of course. :) Now, I know that it seems a bit harsh; Saturdays are a time to relax and unwind from the stresses that your typical Monday-Friday school week may build. The mere thought of Saturday school sends a chill down many students’ spine, and makes their hair stand on end. It makes me shudder even thinking about it!

Alas, sometimes you have to make certain sacrifices. When about three-quarters of the DeSoto County school system’s 31,000 students attended school this past Saturday, it was to make up for the many days lost during the inclement weather. This makes sense to me. Now for all of the students out there, don’t throw your pitchforks my way just yet. ;) What’s one Saturday to make up, in the place of getting out of school later in the summer or doing away with some of your holidays? See my point? I knew you would.

Attendance was best in high schools, and the overall attendance was better than school board officials had initially thought. The best thing about the day was that classes were only 60 % the length of a normal school day. So that helps right?

What do you think about all of this? Do you think it wise to host a makeup day on a weekend, rather than elongating school days in the summer? I want to know your thoughts!

Hold your horses! Not just yet. We have had a lot of people to come in the office lately and ask to go into the swimming pool area. The pools here at Church Lake Apartments will not be opened until Memorial Day Weekend. We have had some great days weatherwise, and we understand the want to go to the pool area. Although the pools are not opened yet, we do have other amenities on property that you can feel free to take advantage of.

There’s a tennis ball court, sand volleyball court, fully stocked lake where you can go fishing, a walking trail around the property, and a free carwash where you can beam your ride!

Living Well on a Budget

Posted on March 8, 2010 · Leave a Comment

In this day and age, everyone is trying to live well, and not spend their entire paychecks (if they get one) all at once. What I find myself doing is creating a budget for certain luxuries a month.

For example, I am a SUPREME shoe-a-holic. This being so, after setting aside cash for bill and other necessities, I asses the money I have left over and try to come up with a shoe budget. If that means one pair a month or non at all, that’s fine, because I know I’m within my means. I’ve budgeted my money in such a way that I can get two pairs a month, but that doesn’t mean that I do so.

I’ve found a site that lists ways to live well while on a budget. One way to live well and save that was listed, is to plan a swap meet. This means get a group of friends together and trade out never or rarely worn clothes. Catch: make sure you and your friends are similar sizes or have similar styles. You’re almost guaranteed to come out with something new!

What’s your most efficient way to have a ball on a budget?

suncartoonHey Church Lake! Make sure that you get out this weekend and enjoy the sunshine! This weekend will be decidely warmer than days past. No rain or snow in sight! So why not go for a walk, or to the park, or anything that doesn’t involve staying in the house? Don’t forget a jacket though, because it still may be a little chilly. Have fun!

You Want Me to Pay How Much?

toothbrush and paste gansonHey Church Lake! Like many people, I absolutely LOATHE going to the doctor. I try to avoid going to hospitals as much as I can. I hate the smells, the sick feeling, and I’m positively squimish when it comes to needles. But the worst of all of those things is the COST. Many times, you end up over paying for equipment used to ensure your health, and you didn’t even know that you were using them! Many insurance companies automatically write a check without going over the hospital bill in detail, as long as the bill is less than $100 K.

I found a video on the internet outlining some items that patients got overcharged for. The charge that stood out the most to me was the $1000 toothbrush. Yep, you read right. $1000. I start to complain when a toothbrush is $5! Though outrageous, this isn’t the hardest to believe. Check it out!

Do you think that medical bills are just ridiculously high?
