Hi all! Not planning on going out of town for Labor Day Weekend and looking for something to do? The greater Memphis area has a lot of events happening, and one such event is the 8th Annual Chick-fil-A Run/Walk that’s taking place about 20 minutes away from the Church Lake Apartment Community!
The 8th annual Chick-fil-A run/walk is benefiting Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South (the largest and fastest growing organization providing economic education to K-12 students). The race will take place on Labor Day, Monday September 6th at 9 am in downtown Memphis. Online registration for the race lasts until tomorrow, September 3rd. You can also register on-site beginning at 7:30 am on race day.
Though exercising may not be your idea of fun on your work-free weekend, it’s for a good cause, and can be really fun with a group of friends. The whole point of the race is to have fun; try not to focus on winning or who may be overlapping you.
5K participants may pick up their race packets from Sept. 1 through Sept. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Junior Achievement located at 307 Madison Ave.
Besides this race, what else do you have planned for this weekend?

Royalty in Southaven!

Have you always known that your little girl is a princess? Well, here’s her chance to enter into royalty! The Mid-South Fair is now accepting application for poised, personable goodwill representatives for the 2010 Miss Youth Personality and Miss Mid-South Fair contest.
Miss Youth Personality contestants must be between the ages of 13 and 16. Miss Mid-South Fair contestants must be single and between the ages of 17 and 24 as of September 1st. The deadline to enter both contests is September 9th, and the date of the actual contest is September 24th at the DeSoto Civic Center. This is also the start of the Mid-South Fair which will run from September 24th to October 3rd.
Judging is based on appearance, poise, intelligence, and personality. An educational scholarship will be awarded to the winners. There has been a lot of speculation over the years over whether or not these scholarship pageants have any merit, or whether or not they’re just beauty pageants. Now, I’ve seen shows like Toddlers and Tiaras, and how those little girls behave, and every scholarship pageant isn’t like that.
I’ve competed in many, many scholarship pageants in my life, and I can truly attest that they did wonders for my confidence and poise. I learned valuable interview skills that I have used in the professional world, and walking the runways has given me the confidence I need to speak or do relatively anything in front of large crowds. As long as you research the pageant and see exactly what it’s about, I personally don’t see any harm in it.
If you would like more information about the pageants, visit the Mid-South Fair’s website.
Your daughter/sister/cousin/friend can live like the royals!

Family Fun at the Davis YMCA Community Festival

Hey Church Lake Apartments family and friends! Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Amidst the plethora of events going on this weekend in the DeSoto and Memphis areas, the Davis YMCA Community Festival is something worth checking out.
The Davis YMCA Community Festival is taking place this Saturday at August 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mayor A.C. Wharton and Rockey the Redbird will join the Whitehaven community in a day of fun, food and fitness to benefit the Davis YMCA.
There are many different events taking place at the festival: the annual YMCA/Southland Mall 5K Walk, BBQ cooking contest, silent auction, senior citizen bake sale, appearances by the Whitehaven High School band, pom pom squad and football team, and a car and bike show featuring motorcycles from the HRMC of Memphis. Seems like a lot of stuff to be taking place in only 7 hours, doesn’t it?
One thing that I can really appreciate about these festivals is when they are sponsoring a good cause. The YMCA is partnering with the HRMC of Memphis to raise funds for the Y’s We Build People campaign. The We Build People Campaign also supports the Y’s Open Door initiative which makes it possible for them to keep their doors open to any and everyone regardless of their ability to pay.
Admission is free and open to everyone! Don’t you just love it when great events are this close to the Church Lake Apartment Community? The Davis YMCA Community Festival is only 9 minutes from ‘home‘.
Hope to see you there!

I know that there are tons of little girls out there who want nothing more than to be fairy princesses. At the Fairy Tale Ball, they can be whatever they want, and are encouraged to dress in fairy tale costumes. Even the boys can be little princes or knights in shinning armor!
The event is free to the public, and lasts from 5 pm to 6:30 pm.

Hey Church Lake! Are you looking for a different kind of circus experience? I’m not talking abstract, Cirque de Solei different, but a circus with soul. If so, you should attend the UniverSoul Circus at Hickory Ridge Mall in Memphis on August 24.
Don’t get it twisted, the circus is fun for everyone of all ages! I may not go every single time that a circus comes to town, but I’ll attend occasionally, especially if one of my nieces or nephews are with me.
For those that have never been to a show, the UniverSoul Circus is easily one of the most interactive circus’ in the world. This circus hasn’t been around as long as Barnum and Bailey, however; this dream began in 1994. It’s vision was to explore the various talents other than singing and dancing that black performers had to offer. It’s the ultimate experiance in “Hip Hop Under the Big Top“.
The stunts are amazing, aerial acts are stunning, and it’s just a whole lot of fun! Everyone can enjoy this circus! From dancing poodles, to high flying basketball dunkers, to tight rope walkers, to animal acts, you’re sure to see it all.
If you’re interested, head to the Hickory Ridge Mall in Memphis, which is about 30 minutes from the Church Lake Apartments. Tickets range from $18 to about $28. Kids prices start at about $15. The circus will be in Memphis from August 24 to August 29. Hope to see you there!

Hey Church Lake! For those of you who are of legal age to drink, maybe you’d be interested in attending the Snowden “Beverage” Festival this Saturday, August 7th from 2-6 pm. Tickets are $35 the day of the event and don’t worry, you won’t have to BYOB.
What kind of beverage am I talking about? I’m talking brews, logger, ales, that type of “beverage”. Get my drift? It’s all taking place at the Snowden Grove Amphitheater in Southaven. This is a pretty big deal for some in Southaven. In order to keep things safe and orderly, Mr. Taxi in Southaven is offering a flat rate of $25 round trip for up to 4 people to and from the event and the Holiday Inn or Comfort Suites.
The festival will feature over 70 drinks from around the world. Once your ID has been checked at the festival, you will receive a wristband and a souvenir sampling glass. Generally speaking, the glass will allow you unlimited samples during the event, but please be cautioned: be sure to limit your intake. They want this to be an enjoyable time for everyone.
There will be food for purchase (as you will definitely need it), and live musical acts including Cody Dickenson and The Perfect Vessels. Check the website for a full list of who’s attending.
Be safe if you attend, and drink responsibly!

Hey Church Lake! Do you like to laugh? If so, the Hit Men of Comedy Show at the DeSoto Civic Center may be right up your alley!

If you’ve never seen any of these men perform their stand-up live, just check out YouTube for some of their videos; it’ll leave you in stitches! No, it’s not the Original Kings of Comedy, which featured Steve Harvery, DL Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and the late, great Bernie Mac, but I’m sure it will be just as funny.

End of the Summer Social in Memphis!

Well Church Lake, it’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. Well, it is for those who have had a summer ‘break’. For me, it just makes me realize how time flies; I feel like it was just yesterday that I was wearing snow boots and scarves. Oh well, at least it’ll still be warm for a while. But you all know how Memphis is a big party city, so I’m sure that the Memphis – The Summer Experience 2010 End of Summer Bash is only one of the end of summer parties to come. But let’s see what this one is about, shall we?
The End of Summer Social is the last event of the Memphis-The Summer Experience 2010 series of activities. This will be an evening of great music, good food, signature drinks, and a cash bar for wine and cocktails. It’s also a chance for students to go for that last hoorah before it’s time to hit the books again.
The event is taking place at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art on July 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. While you’re there, you may want to check out the Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present exhibition. It’s sure to be interesting.
Groovin’ In the Grove

Hey Church Lake! Have you gotten enough of the summer concert series taking place around town? I thought not. There’s another music series in your area. Which series is it? It’s the Groovin’ in the Grove series, taking place in Southaven next to the Snowden Grove Park/Amphitheater.
There are at least 5 contests left in the series, and the next one is scheduled for July 27 (next Tuesday) at 7 pm featuring The Fabulous Steeler Band. The Fabulous Steeler Band or “The Steelers” has been performing and entertaining people of the Memphis and Mid-South area for more than 23 years now. The Steelers play a variety of sounds, and are very versatile in their music. Their atmosphere is very family oriented, and are sure to make you dance as they take you through the tunes of the likes of the Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Elvis, and much, much more!
When arriving at the park, be sure to bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and coolers and make it an evening to remember. Why not bring the whole family out? I’m sure they’ll love it.
