A lot of you have been asking to go into the pool area. Hold your horses folks! We are all anxious to get out, lay in the sun, and take a few laps in the pool, especially on days like today, when the temperature is expected to be around 85 degrees! We have set a specific time for the pool area to open, and that is Memorial Day Weekend. That will be a great way to enjoy the holiday, huh?

Cool Video!

I’ve always been a big fan of those domino effect machines. You know, the ones where if you touch one thing, something else happens, that leads to something big in the end? Well, this video by OK for the song “This Too Shall Pass” does just that. The entire video is one big ‘domino effect’ machine, that travels throughout the factory that the video is filmed in. I wasn’t even paying attention to the artists, because I was so intrigued with what the contraption would do next. The ending was a bit weak for my tastes, but I’ll let you be the judge of that. :)

Tell me what you think!

You Want Me to Pay How Much?

toothbrush and paste gansonHey Church Lake! Like many people, I absolutely LOATHE going to the doctor. I try to avoid going to hospitals as much as I can. I hate the smells, the sick feeling, and I’m positively squimish when it comes to needles. But the worst of all of those things is the COST. Many times, you end up over paying for equipment used to ensure your health, and you didn’t even know that you were using them! Many insurance companies automatically write a check without going over the hospital bill in detail, as long as the bill is less than $100 K.

I found a video on the internet outlining some items that patients got overcharged for. The charge that stood out the most to me was the $1000 toothbrush. Yep, you read right. $1000. I start to complain when a toothbrush is $5! Though outrageous, this isn’t the hardest to believe. Check it out!

Do you think that medical bills are just ridiculously high?

Monday Blues?

Monday has rolled around, yet again. Is it just me, or are Mondays the longest days of the week? Yikes! What are some things that you do to get over the Monday blues, outside of the regular cup of coffee, and energy drinks in the morning?

Something that I am going to start doing is to get a checklist for the week completed every Monday morning. This will give us something to hopefully look forward to. When you wake up in the morning, try not to think to yourself, “Ugh, Monday!” Start trying to think of your checklist and things that you need to get accomplished. Try to visit at least one friend or family member every week. If you don’t have any hobbies, try to start having some. Get into some fun hobbies for every Monday evening that you enjoy. That will help you look forward to the end of the work day! Have a great week!

DeSoto County Recieves Clean Bill of Health

DeSoto County is the healthiest county of all 82 counties in Mississippi! Talk about a breath of fresh air! :)

The rankings show DeSoto residents are healthier overall than people in other parts of the state, especially the impoverished Mississippi Delta. DeSoto’s top health ranking was followed by Rankin and Lamar counties. Holmes County finished at the bottom of the county-by-county rankings with Grenada County coming in 76th.

With a successful health promotion campaign and the overall health awareness of the residents, it’s no wonder that DeSoto claimed the top spot! Great job everyone and breathe easy!

What do you do to keep healthy during cold and flu season?

biscuitsHey Church Lake! Everyone has that one person in their familiy who makes the BEST biscuits, be it Mom, you Aunt, your Sister, Grandmother, or even the men in your family. What about you? Are you a biscuit afficianado? If not, here’s a recipe to get you started.

The Classic Biscuit

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup(s) unsalted butter
  • 2 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour (sifted twice before measuring)
  • 1 tablespoon(s) baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon(s) salt
  • 1 cup(s) cold buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoon(s) cold buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon(s) melted butter

Directions:

  • Heat oven to 475 degrees F. Cut butter into small cubes and freeze 15 minutes. Stir dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
  • Cut in butter using either a pastry blender, two knives, or your fingers until mixture resembles a coarse meal.
  • Stir in buttermilk using a fork just until dough forms. Knead 3 to 4 turns on a lightly floured surface and pat into a 7- by 10-inch rectangle. Cut out biscuits using a 3-inch cutter (gathering scraps until all dough is used).
  • Place 2 inches apart on a baking pan. Brush tops with melted butter.
  • Bake on top shelf of oven 16 to 18 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Resident Poll: What Was Your Take on the “We Are the World” Remake?

WeCanHaveWorldPeacePeople have given mixed reviews on the “We Are the World” remake that aired during the opening ceremony of the Olympic games. Some love it, some hate it. Jay-Z spoke out against the song, saying that “it’s like Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, to me. I don’t ever want to see it touched”. I can understand that. Especially with all of the new additions to the song, including rap verses. The best thing about the entire process is the amount of money raised for the Haiti relief efforts.

What do you think? Did you like the remake, or did you think that they could have gone in a different direction?

What Would You Do If Your Dog Tweeted You?

puppy4Puppy tweets! Sounds like a cute idea, right? Well, Mattel is launching a new toy that gives your dog the ability to send Twitter updates about what he or she is doing. And no, I know you’re thinking it, but it is not as advanced as the talking dog collar from the movie “UP”. That would be slightly disturbing to me.

The toy doesn’t list EXACTLY what your dog is saying. It senses when your dog is moving, and chooses from a random list of 500 possible responses to send to your computer. An example would be “I bark because I miss you. There, I said it. Now hurry home.” Cute, huh?

Sure it would get repetitive, but so do humans on occasion right?

Would you buy this for your or a friend’s pet?
