Become Royalty!

Have  you always known that your little girl is a princess? Well, here’s her chance to enter into royalty! The Mid-South Fair is now accepting application for poised, personable goodwill representatives for the 2010 Miss Youth Personality and Miss Mid-South Fair contest.

Miss Youth Personality contestants must be between the ages of 13 and 16. Miss Mid-South Fair contestants must be single and between the ages of 17 and 24 as of September 1st. The deadline to enter both contests is September 9th, and the date of the actual contest is September 24th at the DeSoto Civic Center. This is also the start of the Mid-South Fair which will run from September 24th to October 3rd.

Judging is based on appearance, poise, intelligence, and personality. An educational scholarship will be awarded to the winners. There has been a lot of speculation over the years over whether or not these scholarship pageants have any merit, or whether or not they’re just beauty pageants. Now, I’ve seen shows like Toddlers and Tiaras, and how those little girls behave, and every scholarship pageant isn’t like that.

I’ve competed in many, many scholarship pageants in my life, and I can truly attest that they did wonders for my confidence and poise. I learned valuable interview skills that I have used in the professional world, and walking the runways has given me the confidence I need to speak or do relatively anything in front of large crowds. As long as you research the pageant and see exactly what it’s about, I personally don’t see any harm in it.

If you would like more information about the pageants, visit the Mid-South Fair’s website.

Your daughter/sister/cousin/friend can live like the royals!

Southaven Second-Graders Are On the Ball!

An exercise ball.

Exercise balls are great exercise tools!

When I say that Southaven Second-Graders are on the ball, I mean that literally. The second-graders at Greenbrook Elementary School in Southaven were in for a surprise when they walked into their classroom on the first day of school and found that instead of chairs, there were exercise balls at their desks. Rachel Anglin (2nd grade teacher) sought the donation from the DAC-Southaven in order to promote fitness and good posture among her pupils.

Now, when I think of these exercise balls, added with a bunch of second graders, I just know that chaos will ensue. But from the pictures on the internet, it looks like the kids are being pretty well behaved and are using them as regular chairs. If one misbehaves, they’ll lose their ball for the day and have to sit in a chair. Many straighten up pretty quickly because they want their balls back. I still wouldn’t take those chances though, lol.

Exercise balls are actually pretty beneficial, and not to just help second-graders to get the wiggles out. Apart from providing you with balance training, almost every exercise that you perform with the exercise ball strengthens your core by working them, and they exercise multiple muscles at the same time while you are forced to balance your body while performing them. Even just sitting on them helps with posture.

An exercise ball allows a wide range of exerci...

Get on the ball!

If you’ve always wanted to “get on the ball” so to speak, replacing your desk chair with an exercise ball is a great idea. There are multiple reasons why this could be beneficial such as it helping your posture and balance, and having you move around more rather than sitting in one spot all day.

Exercise balls are exercise and fun at the same time! Have you ever used an exercise ball in  your workouts? If not, throw one into the mix the next time you’re working out in the Church Lake Apartments fitness center.

Family Fun at the Davis YMCA Community Festival

Memphis Skyline

Spend a day in Memphis!

Hey Church Lake Apartments family and friends! Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Amidst the plethora of events going on this weekend in the DeSoto and Memphis areas, the Davis YMCA Community Festival is something worth checking out.

The Davis YMCA Community Festival is taking place this Saturday at August 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mayor A.C. Wharton and Rockey the Redbird will join the Whitehaven community in a day of fun, food and fitness to benefit the Davis YMCA.

There are many different events taking place at the festival: the annual YMCA/Southland Mall 5K Walk, BBQ cooking contest, silent auction, senior citizen bake sale, appearances by the Whitehaven High School band, pom pom squad and football team, and a car and bike show featuring motorcycles from the HRMC of Memphis. Seems like a lot of stuff to be taking place in only 7 hours, doesn’t it?

One thing that I can really appreciate about these festivals is when they are sponsoring a good cause. The YMCA is partnering with the HRMC of Memphis to raise funds for the Y’s We Build People campaign. The We Build People Campaign also supports the Y’s Open Door initiative which makes it possible for them to keep their doors open to any and everyone regardless of their ability to pay.

Admission is free and open to everyone! Don’t you just love it when great events are this close to the Church Lake Apartment Community? The Davis YMCA Community Festival is only 9 minutes from ‘home‘. :)

Hope to see you there!

Cinderella's Castle at night

Cinderella's Castle

Hey Church Lake! Get the kiddies in gear and come out to the family friendly 14th Annual “Fairy Tale Ball” at the Stars in Motion fitness center and performing arts studio on Tuesday, August 17th at 5 pm.

The Fairy Godmother will be there and there will be activities for children aged 2 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult to attend the event.

I know that there are tons of little girls out there who want nothing more than to be fairy princesses. At the Fairy Tale Ball, they can be whatever they want, and are encouraged to dress in fairy tale costumes. Even the boys can be little princes or knights in shinning armor!

The event is free to the public, and lasts from 5 pm to 6:30 pm.

Hey Church Lake! Do you like to laugh? If so, the Hit Men of Comedy Show at the DeSoto Civic Center may be right up your alley!

Comedians Earthquake, Arnez J., J. Anthony Brown, George Wilborn, and Tyler Craig will be rocking the house on Saturday, August 7 at 8 pm. Tickets are $45, $55, and $60. You’ll have to leave the kiddies at home for this one folks; this one is for the Grown Folks. :)

If you’ve never seen any of these men perform their stand-up live, just check out YouTube for some of their videos; it’ll leave you in stitches! No, it’s not the Original Kings of Comedy, which featured Steve Harvery, DL Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and the late, great Bernie Mac, but I’m sure it will be just as funny.

Get your tickets now (ticketmaster.com), as I’m sure they’re close to being sold out (if they’re not selling out as I’m typing this).

Get ready to laugh!

Fresh Produce, Fresh Air

Farmers' Market

It’s always a bargain to shop fresh produce. Not only are you supporting local growers, but you’re insuring that you’re not ingesting pesticides and other chemicals used to store produce during shipping. That’s why if you take a stroll through Hernando’s historic Town Square on Saturday mornings from now until fall, you’ll get more than you bargained for.

The Hernando Farmer’s market puts you face to face with local growers, and some of the freshest groceries that you could never hope to find in a supermarket. Unless it’s Whole Foods. :)

In addition to a host of fresh fruits and vegetables, the farmers market features canned items, knife sharpening, baked goods, herbs and bedding plants, jams and jellies, goat cheese and dairy fresh milk and eggs.

The Hernando Farmers Market isn’t only a place to shop. It’s a place to socialize, relax under shade trees in the beautiful square, or walk your dog.

You should make a trip down this Saturday and check it out for yourself!

3 Things Not to Say on a Job Interview

Job Interview

With the way that the job market is today, most people are ecstatic when they learn that they’ve been selected for a job interview. Little do they know, that’s the easy part. You have to be a knock out for employers to consider employing you these days, and what you say and how you act are HUGE contributing factors. Take note of these 3 things that you should not say on your interview:

  • Don’t say: What are the hours like? or What’s the vacation policy?
  • Why: You’re seen as focusing more on slacking off than working
  • Say instead: “What’s the day-to-day like here?” Then, if you’ve really jumped through every hoop and time off still hasn’t been mentioned, say, “Can you tell me about the compensation and benefits package?”
  • Don’t say: Do you think I’d fit in here?
  • Why: I don’t know, do you?
  • Say instead: What do you enjoy about working here? It shows you’re interested in the company.
  • Don’t say: My current boss is horrible
  • Why: This is a big no-no. It’s very unprofessional, and for all you know, your interviewer and your current boss may be good friends.
  • Say instead: I’m ready for a new challenge, or something of the positive nature.

Glee goes Gaga

I have been trying to get Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” out of my head for weeks now. But with all of the parodies and internet videos, don’t forget to mention radio play, it’s near impossible. Now, one of my favorite TV shows, “Glee” is dedicating a show to Gaga. Title track? “Bad Romance”. I just can’t escape Church Lake…
